SHIFT COVERAGE REVIEW

Day and night coverage

Checks whether one crew is assigned to each shift category per date, not minimum qualified headcount. Leave/training can introduce gaps. Local rules and actual staffing remain your responsibility.

UNDERSTAND THE ROTATION

Eight phases create the DuPont schedule.

The classic DuPont shift pattern is a repeating 28-day work/off rotation used in continuous operations. It is not a generic two-on/two-off schedule: its distinctive features are alternating day and night blocks, a compressed middle stretch and a seven-day off period.

01 NIGHTS

Four night shifts

Cycle days 1–4 are four consecutive nights. The default sample uses a 7 PM start and a next-day finish.

02 RECOVER

Three off-days

Cycle days 5–7 give a break after the first night block; individual recovery needs still vary.

03 DAYS

Three day shifts

Cycle days 8–10 change to daytime assignments, providing three days of day-crew duty.

04 REST

One off-day

Cycle day 11 is the single off-day separating the three-day sequence from the next three-night run.

05 NIGHTS

Three night shifts

Cycle days 12–14 return to nights. Verify the approved transition timing before use.

06 RECOVER

Three more off-days

Cycle days 15–17 are nonworking days, prior to the final run of day shifts.

07 DAYS

Four day shifts

Cycle days 18–21 finish the working portion of the repeating schedule.

08 EXTENDED OFF

Seven days off

Cycle days 22–28 form the characteristic seven-day break before the next cycle begins.

COMPLETE DUPONT PLANNING GUIDE

Build and adjust a four-crew rota without breaking the base cycle.

This guide explains the actual controls on this page, including cycle alignment, work exceptions, schedule exports and limitations of coverage math.

01CYCLE ANCHOR

Align the real organizational start date

Start by setting the anchor date to the first day of Crew A’s four-night block. That is cycle day 1 in this generator. All other dates—including dates in later months and years—are calculated from that fixed reference. A wrong anchor does not change the 28-day mathematical sequence, but it places every assignment on the wrong calendar date.

Four crews are phased seven days apart. Crew A starts at base day 1; the remaining crews use offsets of seven, fourteen and twenty-one days. Their names and which team your organization calls A, B, C or D may differ. Compare at least one known real shift for every crew with the displayed grid before using the schedule for operational work.

02REAL SHIFT TIMES

Set both duty windows correctly

Day and night shift starts are independent controls. The duration selector determines how long each automatically generated work shift lasts. For example, a 07:00 day start with a 12-hour duration finishes at 19:00, while a 19:00 night start finishes at 07:00 the following morning. A night shift belongs to the date on which it begins, even though it extends into the next calendar day.

Set local start times to match the workplace. Changes to these base settings affect standard generated duty cells but do not erase saved date-specific overrides. Calendar exports use absolute timestamps based on the browser’s time zone. Check imported times in your actual calendar, especially near daylight-saving transitions.

03EDIT & ADD

Change individual dates without rewriting DuPont

Select any crew/date cell to open its editor. You can assign a day shift, night shift, leave, training or an off-day; edit the label, add a short operational note, or adjust a shift’s exact start and end times. A change is stored as an exception tied to that specific crew and calendar date. The underlying repeating 28-day algorithm remains available for comparison.

Clicking an empty or off-duty cell is the simplest way to add coverage or an additional shift. Drag a work cell toward a different date or crew when you need to transfer duty; the original position becomes off and the destination receives a dated assignment. The destination’s previous status is replaced, so inspect the before/after coverage report and use Undo immediately if the move was not intended.

04DRAG & RESIZE

Keep clock-time control precise

On a desktop pointer device, press and drag a day or night cell onto another date/crew cell. Use the slim resize grip at the bottom of the duty block to increase or decrease its duration in fifteen-minute increments. You can always open the editor instead to enter an exact start/end time, a more reliable option for touch devices, keyboard access and unusually long duties.

Every drag, resize and editor change enters the Undo/Redo history. The time editor supports duties extending past midnight. For exceptionally long shifts, confirm the start and end dates in the exported calendar rather than interpreting the 28-day grid as an hour-by-hour visual scale.

05CHECK COVERAGE

Understand day/night staffing gaps

The coverage panel evaluates one duty-category slot for day and one for night on every displayed date. It flags missing slots or extra assignments after overrides. This is a mechanical crew-category check: it cannot establish whether a crew contains enough staff or has the right skills, certification, supervision, breaks, relief coverage, or fitness for duty.

The crew workload panel shows scheduled shift counts and planned hours. In the unmodified 12-hour cycle one crew works fourteen shifts—seven days and seven nights—with 168 scheduled hours in twenty-eight days, which averages forty-two scheduled hours over each of those four weeks. This is not a payroll calculation and individual weeks do not necessarily have equal hours.

06SAVE & SHARE

Back up the exact schedule you created

Guest work is automatically saved in the current browser under this DuPont tool’s local storage key. A JSON backup includes your anchor, shift times, crew names, cycle range and all date-specific exceptions. Restore uses the data in that file and replaces the current local draft only after confirmation. Export CSV for spreadsheet review, ICS for dated calendar events, and Print/PDF for a simple handout.

If you sign in using your existing ScheduleFlowLab site account, “Save to My Schedules” creates or updates a dated cloud schedule in the existing schedule/event tables. The live account pages remain separate. Cloud saving depends on the configured Supabase project and permissions; retain a JSON backup when you need a full copy of overrides and generator-specific settings.

ROTATION QUALITY & RESPONSIBLE USE

A correct pattern is not an approved staffing plan.

DuPont rotas commonly serve operations that run around the clock, where day/night handovers, crew competence and absence coverage matter. Calendar mathematics alone cannot assess employee suitability, statutory working limits, collective agreements, local overtime definitions or required staffing levels.

Anchor verificationMatch known published crew assignments before releasing the plan.
Recovery and fatigueReview turnaround intervals, switching between day/night duty and the burden of concentrated workweeks.
Exceptions and reliefRecord leave/training and confirm who actually covers missing positions.

DUPONT SCHEDULE FAQs

Detailed answers before you publish a crew roster.

What is the DuPont shift schedule?

The common DuPont schedule is a twenty-eight-day rotating pattern for continuous operations. The usual sequence for one crew is four nights, three off, three days, one off, three nights, three off, four days and seven off. Four crews are offset to provide ongoing day/night duty.

How many hours are worked in a standard DuPont cycle?

With twelve-hour duties, one crew has fourteen working shifts in twenty-eight days: fourteen multiplied by twelve equals 168 scheduled hours, averaging 42 per week across four weeks. The distribution between individual weeks is uneven. Unpaid break treatment, overtime and payroll are not calculated here.

What is the seven-day off block?

Days twenty-two through twenty-eight in the base sequence are consecutive off-days. This extended break is one of DuPont’s most recognizable characteristics. A real workplace may adjust it for additional work, relief staffing or approved leave.

Can I shift one person to another date?

This generator treats each row as a crew, not an individual employee. Dragging moves the crew-level duty exception to a new crew/date. For individual employees within crews, use the organization’s authorized staff rostering process or a separate employee scheduling system.

Why can an edited date show a coverage warning?

The base cycle has one day crew and one night crew on each calendar start date. An exception may leave a duty slot empty or cause more than one crew to be assigned to the same category. The review panel reports this arithmetic difference without deciding whether the resulting staffing is operationally adequate.

Can I generate more than one 28-day period?

Yes. Display 28, 56, 84 or 112 days, use the cycle navigation buttons, and check dates well beyond the initial anchor. The base sequence repeats every twenty-eight calendar days, while saved overrides remain attached to their original exact dates.

How are night shifts represented in the calendar?

A night duty is associated with its start date. The exported ICS event finishes the next morning when the end time crosses midnight. An imported calendar displays events according to its own time-zone settings, so check the result if your location observes daylight-saving time.

Is a 28-day DuPont schedule always legally compliant?

No. Legal limits, rest rules, minimum staffing, employment contracts, qualifications and sector-specific safety requirements vary. The generator presents editable time assignments; authorized human review is necessary before relying on the output.

What happens if I change the cycle anchor?

The new anchor shifts the mathematical pattern for every date. Any manual exceptions already saved still refer to their specific crew/date, so you should inspect them against the new baseline. Export a JSON backup before making a major anchor correction.

Can I save my DuPont rotation without an account?

Yes. The tool autosaves to this browser and offers JSON, CSV, ICS and print/PDF output. Optional cloud save uses your signed-in ScheduleFlowLab account and depends on your site's Supabase configuration.
